Rulebook Overview

The StrayRP Rulebook is written to be as clear and concise as possible. We encourage you to read about our Ticket Rules, as they are part of our rulebook and vital to the spirit of our server with information on how StrayRP handles tickets and player reports.

Examples of rules are provided throughout the rulebook, along with guidelines for both specific and general types of roleplay. We hope that this rulebook will be a good guide for you as a reader so you may understand our rules and expectations within the server.

If any rules are unclear, you are always welcome to open a ticket to provide feedback or ask for clarification.

Below are the specific ways StrayRP staff will foster these aspirations on the server and in the community.

Rewarding Storytelling

Storytelling is the true reason we all roleplay — after all, who doesn’t love a good story? In our community, we strive to foster a culture where storytelling and effective roleplay are valued and rewarded.

We want players to feel that their contributions to the world of Fairmont matter.

Therefore, we highly encourage players to take risks, try new ideas, and breathe life into their characters in ways that inspire others to do the same. Great roleplay might not only earn recognition in the form of community shout-outs, but also in-game rewards, or simply the shared joy of seeing a story unfold together.

Most importantly, we believe that storytelling should be celebrated not just for big, dramatic moments, but also for the small details that make the world feel alive. Every interaction and every choice is an opportunity to ICly enrich the experience for everyone.

Roleplay Etiquette

The quality of roleplay and enjoyment of the game highly depend on a certain respect for basic roleplay etiquette.

Generally, the rule is:

Respect your fellow roleplayers’ RP as much as you want them to respect yours. Keep in mind that we are all playing this game together, even our enemies in a conflict are fellow roleplayers writing a story with us. There are people behind the character. Keep that in mind.

Whitelist Process

To join our server, we have a process to whitelist new players. This is to ensure that the roleplay quality stays high while also vetting people with ill intentions from entering the server and breaking roleplay for everyone.

The staff team at StrayRP manually whitelists users, and it may take some time to receive a response. Your whitelist application will be reviewed by a staff member, who will then either deny or approve your request.

If you are denied, we kindly request that you wait 5 (five) days before reapplying.

Rule Loopholes

The use of loopholes in the rules to gain an advantage or avoid punishment is not a valid approach. This may result in disciplinary action.

1.0 Requirements To Play On StrayRP

  • You must be 18 years old or older to play on this server. If you are found to be below the age of 18, you will be removed from the community.

  • This is an English-speaking roleplay server. Short sentences in other languages are allowed for roleplay purposes, but everyone must speak English in order to communicate properly.

  • You must own a microphone in order to be able to roleplay. If you have a disability or wish to play a mute character, please open a ticket in our Discord to request permission from staff.

  • Your character must be original and fictional.

  • You may import your character from other servers, but any of their history must be altered to fit the lore of our server, and any history must be referred to as having happened in a different state (i.e. Texas, Kentucky, etc.)

1.1 Remaining In Character

All players are to remain In Character at all times.

Out Of Character comments and conversations are strictly prohibited and should occur through Discord only. Any breaking of character to avoid or invalidate a scene is strictly prohibited. Ignoring characters or scenes/pretending they do not exist, is considered breaking character and is prohibited.

Breaking character is also known as FailRP, going OOC, and, in some cases, bleed.

1.2 Realism, Courtesy, & Inclusivity — ZERO TOLERANCE

We understand that not everything that is realistic is inclusive. In an effort to enhance the enjoyment of all players, we strive to balance historical authenticity with inclusivity. Our community prides itself on respectful treatment and fair interactions with all players, both in-character and out-of-character.

To that end, the following behavior is strictly prohibited:

  • Sexism

  • Misogyny

  • Racism

  • Anti-LGBTQIA+ Rhetoric

  • Unwelcome Advances

  • Harassment

  • Forced Romantic Narratives

No player should ever feel targeted or made uncomfortable when roleplaying in our community. It is essential that everyone is mindful of their interactions with fellow roleplayers. Remember, you may interact with a character, but there is still a person behind that character. Just like all roleplay, make sure that the player is engaging in the roleplay you give without it being forced.

NOTE: Breaking these rules may result in a severe or permanent ban.

1.3 Fairmont’s Setting, Language, & History

Our server’s setting is set in the year of 1889 in the state of Fairmont, meaning that any language and roleplay that is taking place should take that into consideration. The clothing must be appropriate to the era in which the server takes place.

All real-life history leading up to the year 1889 is canon in Fairmont. We do not believe in the whitewashing of history and pretending that the injustice did not happen. Fairmont is intended to be a fair and equitable setting for all players.

You may acknowledge historic injustice in backstories and setting, but you may not play a character who actively holds or expresses racist, misogynistic, or similarly harmful ideologies in a way that targets other players. Historical injustices may be referenced, but no character may be portrayed as responsible for or involved in them.

It is not permitted for characters to have had any direct hand in historic events, this includes but is not limited to having met historical figures or the involvement of world-changing events.

Avoid the following when possible:

  • Modern language, such as modern swearing and slang (“Noob”, “Cringe”, “Bro”, and similar language).

  • Try to limit immersion-breaking phrases (”Use your X-Muscle”, “What are you called in the newspaper,” and similar phrases).

  • Any futuristic names and topics.

1.4 Representing Cultures That Are Not Your Own

You are permitted to play a character with a background outside of your own real life culture and ethnicity in our server. However, the character must have a proper comprehension of that culture and be played respectfully. You cannot create a character with racist undertones that is a caricature of the culture you are portraying and you may not portray cultures in a reductive or stereotypical manner.

It is your responsibility to educate yourself on what is considered a harmful portrayal of a culture. If members of that culture express that your portrayal feels harmful or stereotypical, you are expected to listen, adjust, or retire the character if asked by staff.

1.5 Banned Types of Roleplay & Themes

The following types of roleplay are strictly prohibited on StrayRP:

  • Disgusting Roleplay — Roleplay involving disgusting subjects such as disgusting public behavior, bodily fluids, or utterly vulgar gestures and language.

  • Disgusting Injuries — Roleplaying disgusting injuries such as being shot in private parts, involving bodily fluids, and similarly. (Roleplaying bleeding and injury is, of course, fine.) Rule break to this will result in severe or permanent ban.

  • Suicide & Self-Harm — Any and all roleplay focusing on a character taking their life or harming themselves is strictly prohibited. This includes both suicide Character Kills and threats to commit suicide/self-harm. Suicide may not be mentioned in character background stories or discussed as a topic of conversation between characters.

  • Pregnancy Roleplay — It is not permitted to roleplay as a pregnant person on StrayRP.

  • Child Roleplay — Roleplaying as a child character under 18 or an NPC child being present in a scene is strictly prohibited.

  • Erotic Roleplay (ERP) — Roleplay involving graphic descriptions of sexual acts or abuse of emotes to simulate sexual behavior is strictly prohibited. This includes leaving graphic descriptions within the server in the form of details. Characters flirting, kissing, making adult jokes, and using innuendos are allowed. Breaking this rule may result in a permanent ban with no appeal.

  • Contagion Roleplay — Player-driven outbreaks or deliberate spreading of disease are prohibited.

  • Slavery Roleplay — Roleplay involving the exploitation of people against their will such as indentured servitude and removal of freedom. This rule does not include short-term captures and temporary holds. Roleplay involving the active practice or recreation of slavery is prohibited. Historical references are allowed within appropriate context.

  • White Supremacy

  • Incest

  • Sexual Assault — Strictly prohibited.

When in doubt if something is “too far,” assume it is and do not play it out. If you are unsure, open a ticket and ask staff first. If a scene focuses excessively on graphic, fetishized, or unnecessarily detailed physical content, it may be considered a violation.

1.6 Toxicity & Bleed

At StrayRP, we strive to keep a healthy roleplaying environment for both staff and our players within our community. It is important to emphasize the importance of in-character actions not being reflective of who the person is out-of-character. It’s every player’s responsibility to not mix the emotions of IC and OOC. At the end of the day, we are all adults and it is up to you to be the best version of yourself, always.

1.7 Insulting Language

Conflict is common in roleplay and inflammatory language may arise. It is permitted to use foul language to insult your character’s enemy, however, there is a limit. For instance, using the word “bitch” repeatedly as your only insult towards a woman is considered misogynistic and it does not belong on the server both IC and OOC. Excessive or repetitive targeted insults may be considered harassment and are not permitted. We ask all players to be creative and mindful with the language that they use.

1.8 Other Roleplay Servers

Promotions, badmouthing, and discussing of other roleplaying servers and communities is strictly prohibited on StrayRP.

2.0 Technology

Streaming, Discord, and out-of-character friendships are all excellent ways to form connections and enhance the gaming experience. As a result, we strongly encourage you to engage with the community. However, we hold a firm stance regarding using third-party apps, mods, and streams to gain an unfair advantage over fellow players.

2.1 Cheating

The use of third-party programs, macros, overlays, and similarly are strictly prohibited if they give an unfair advantage over other players.

2.2 Stream Sniping & Livestreaming

It is not permitted to be in a livestream of another active player while In Character. You may not use any information gathered from that source when you do arrive In Character and must avoid the location of the streamer for the next 30 minutes.

This is to prevent people from meta-gaming, stream-sniping, or attempting to gain the attention of any streamers or communities they might be interested in. We understand that not all players watch streams with this intention, but it is challenging to investigate intentions. Therefore, we kindly request that our players refrain from doing so and be mindful of this.

2.3 Crosshairs

Any evidence of crosshair usage will result in an immediate and permanent ban. We are a crosshair-free server, and any attempt to bypass this would be unfair to everyone else.

2.4 Voice Changers

Voice changers can help facilitate your roleplay and help you play roles that you otherwise could not comfortably portray vocally. However, using absurd, unrealistic, or off-pitched voice changers can destroy the immersion for everyone. If you decide to use a voice changer, please attempt to ensure it is believable and human-sounding.

2.5 Mods

This server utilizes numerous modifications to the base game, and we are meticulous about its balance. Any necessary adjustments to ensure fairness and comfort will be made by the admins. Any attempt to modify the game to gain an edge or advantage will result in a permanent ban. Any non-performance-enhancing mods will need to be reviewed by staff in a ticket before being accepted, such as re-shaders like Visual R and similar programs.

2.6 VPNs

Any use of VPNs will result in a ban until the VPN is no longer in use. This can be appealed via our Ticket Bot. Additionally, if you must use a VPN for safety or technical reasons, open a ticket before connecting to the server.

2.7 Generative AI

Fairmont is a player-driven roleplay environment. All in-character content should be created by players to maintain immersion, creativity, and authenticity.

The use of generative AI is not permitted for content that is presented in-character or shared publicly within the server, including but not limited to:

  • AI-generated images (e.g. posters, portraits, advertisements)

  • AI-generated written content (e.g. letters, books, documents, backstories)

  • AI-generated in-game materials intended to represent player-created work

However, AI may be used as a private tool to assist with:

  • brainstorming ideas

  • drafting or refining text

  • planning characters, stories, or systems

Any content brought into the server must be meaningfully created, edited, and attributed to the player.

This rule exists to ensure that all visible roleplay content reflects genuine player effort and creativity, rather than automated generation. AI can be used as a tool for inspiration and assisting, but content should be made by the roleplayer.

Staff reserve the right to remove content that appears AI-generated if it lacks clear player authorship or effort.

2.8 Exploits

It is not permitted to exploit the game in a manner that gains you unfair or unusual advantages over others. Any exploits founds must be reported to staff.

2.9 Out Of Bounds

It is not permitted to travel out of bounds of the map or areas that are inaccessible through abnormal means. This includes traveling by boat to reach the islands by the edge of the map.

2.10 Music

Music played through microphones, instruments, gramophones, or other in-character sources must remain immersive and era-appropriate to the year 1889. Modern music, heavily edited audio, meme audio, and immersion-breaking sound effects are not permitted.

Additionally, music played publicly on the server should avoid copyrighted or pre-recorded commercial music, which may cause copyright strikes for streamers and content creators in the community.

Players are encouraged to use:

  • Live performances

  • Instrumental recordings

  • Public domain music

  • Era-appropriate folk, classical, frontier, or saloon-style music

Staff reserves the right to ask players to stop using audio that is disruptive, immersion-breaking, or harmful to the server's content-creation environment.

3.0 Powergaming

Powergaming means to use in-game mechanics or the world to gain unfair advantages that would realistically not be possible. Power-gaming can also be verbal and through text.

The following are examples, but are not exhaustive:

  • Placing an item into the air and jumping on it to reach a higher place

  • Robbing furniture or other big items and running away with them without the use of a wagon, /me’s to symbolize carrying, or carrying it all in your pockets

  • Taking an item through a wall

  • Breaking free from a lasso without any roleplay that indicated the lasso can be broken out of

  • Breaking open windows in order to gain access to a locked building without any roleplay

  • Verbally telling someone what kind of injuries they have without them telling you their injuries prior

Please be mindful of this when roleplaying. When in doubt, choose the option that gives more roleplay, not more advantage.

3.1 Asset Transferring

Asset-transferring means handing over money, horses, or items in-game to other characters in an excessive amount, knowing Out Of Character that your character will soon die or that you will stop playing. The use of a will for a character must be written out and seen by a lawyer In Character, pre-planned before character death. Any transfer of large sums of money will not be allowed, but items and horses are valid for will transfer.

Transferring resources IC following OOC transactions is also prohibited.

This rule exists to ensure fairness to other players without compromising immersion or disrupting roleplay. Engaging in any of the above activities intentionally will result in disciplinary action.

3.2 Meta-Gaming

Metagaming means to use any information that you know OOC but that your character would not know in the game, and using that information to your character’s advantage.

This could be, but is not limited to:

  • Suddenly knowing your character’s enemy’s location because your friend told you on Discord, or because you watched a stream

  • Being aware of secrets you learned about a different character that your current character would not otherwise know

  • General information you learned OOC or about different characters

Violation of this rule will result in disciplinary action.

4.0 Making A Realistic Character

Every character should be original and fictional. You may not impersonate any famous personalities, whether fictional or real. You should create a character that possesses its own story, personality, flaws, strengths, and weaknesses. Your character should wear era-appropriate and immersive clothing that is realistic for the time period in which the character is set.

Breaking this rule may result in a forced renaming of the character or character retirement.

4.1 Story Build-Up

In roleplay, every character has a story with a beginning, its peaks, and eventually an ending. To create realistic characters and compelling storylines, it is advisable to develop a character that begins at a point where there is room for growth and character development. Pacing in roleplay is important.

It does not make sense for your character to join the server as a renowned gang leader or someone who is already famous, however, your character was not born yesterday. Having past experiences or specific skills would make sense but should be appropriate to the world that they inhabit. Your character’s story should be slow-burn and well-paced so that you may build up a story and connections between other characters. Characters brought from other servers or with extensive histories may reference such events as if they were lived experiences, but should not be driving storytelling forces in Fairmont.

4.2 Roleplay Immersion

Every player is expected to always stay in character and contribute to the immersive experience offered by the year 1889 at Fairmont. This means that language, attire, and behavior should remain consistent and appropriate for the era in which the server is set. In an effort to maintain immersion, NPCs in the server are considered to be human in the same way your character is.

4.3 Family-Member Roleplay

It is not permitted to play multiple characters from the same family or in the same gang. This is to prevent bleed and other potential issues arising. You may, however, have other players play your character’s parent/sibling/relative, etc.

4.4 Collaborative Roleplay

Roleplay on StrayRP strives to be realistic, inclusive, and fair to everyone. It is about storylines and storytelling, and this should be the goal of as many interactions as possible. It is right to be a main character in some scenarios and a supportive one in others.

Providing no roleplay, not playing by the rules, dominating roleplay at the expense of others, or choosing to ignore storytelling will be considered subpar roleplay and may result in educational or disciplinary actions.

4.5 Secondary Character

You may have more than one character when you roleplay, but the following rules apply:

  • Your characters may not know your primary character or any other of your characters in any capacity. This is to prevent storyline-merging.

  • Characters may not tangentially interact through linked events i.e your law character must be recused from any event involving a criminal secondary character.

4.6 Detail Policy

Details are tools to support and enrich roleplay, not to replace or control other players.

  • Use details to leave clear clues, descriptions, or information about something that has already happened in roleplay.

  • Details should be specific and informative, not vague or filler. If it doesn’t add to the RP, it doesn’t need to be in a detail.

  • Do not use details to force emotions, actions, or physical effects onto other players.

    • For example, avoid things like:

      • “A snake lunges at you and bites you.”

      • “The rotting smell makes you nauseous.”

A better use of environmental details would be:

      • “A snake rattles in the grass, waiting to strike”

      • “A tripwire is strung across the door, waiting to be activated”

  • Details alone may not be used to initiate conflict. Actual initiation requires clear, active communication between players.

Crime Scenes And Leaving Details Behind

If your character commits a crime, you are expected to leave reasonable clues that could lead back to them, for example:

“Muddy footprints lead east from the barn. A witness recalls someone in a green vest running away.”

This is the minimum standard for a crime-related details.

Detail Clean-Up

  • Details should be spaced out in a reasonable way.

  • Remove details that are no longer needed or relevant.

  • While some details may auto-expire, you are still expected to delete anything that’s cluttering the area or no longer serving the roleplay.

5.0 Weapon-Lethality & Expectation

All weapons are to be seen as lethal and treated with respect. This includes firearms, knives, machetes, hammers, and throwable objects. Not respecting the lethality depending on the scenario can be considered NVL.

Throwing knives and knives may be roleplayed out as dull for roleplay purposes and practicing scenarios.

The Varmint Rifle may be used as a practice gun with dummy bullets only if roleplay has been established to acquire said bullets from a sheriff's office, a gunsmith, or another location that stores them.

Spontaneous shootings claiming it was with dummy bullets are forbidden and may result in a forced CK. This rule is for roleplay purposes only. For example, it applies to a large training day for new deputies or a gang preparing for war, not casual shootouts for fun.

5.1 Dueling

A duel is a one-on-one lethal conflict, be it with guns, knives, or other lethal weapons, between two characters. The duel needs to be agreed upon by both participants using exactly that term (“Duel”), and not by another term (“fight me outside”).

Both participants need to be aware that the duel is taking place.

The loser of the duel must roleplay heavy, lasting injuries at MINIMUM, if not CK. Such injuries could be losing the ability to use their arm, thus preventing them from ever lifting a gun again, losing an eye, and so forth. Be creative!

The heavy permanent injury should have a meaningful and weighted impact on the character’s abilities and/or personality. For example, if the character loses an eye, they should experience a tangible deficit as a result – such as poor depth perception leading to the player intentionally compromising their aim, or a similar consequence.

It is not allowed to get outside help during the duel.

5.2 Random Death Match (RDM)

RDM means to incapacitate another character for no apparent roleplay reason and without any initiation. This also applies when your character has a reason for not sharing with the victim.

Examples:

  • You walk down the street in Valentine. Suddenly, someone runs up to you and shoots your character in the head. You don’t know that person.

  • Your character bumps into another character. They loudly say “What the fuck?”, turn around, and shoot you.

  • Your character is approached by a character they have never seen before. That character goes on a rant about how they don’t like your scarf and then proceeds to incapacitate your character with a hammer.

5.3 Conflict Roleplay

Conflict can be a great storytelling device for all parties involved, leading to interesting character development and intriguing interactions. However, we believe that conflict roleplay should be done safely and in a healthy manner.

Some key rules to remember:

  • All roleplay is a give-and-take. Continuous insulting without any roleplay given to the other party is never okay behavior.

  • There is a person behind the character. Be mindful of your interactions with one another, even as a bad guy!

  • Have a reason for why you do what you do. Utilizing the same reason to attack another character in a conflict over and over again is not permitted.

  • You may not repeatedly target a player to force an outcome. Attacking or robbing someone should be considered the end of a conflict, unless the other party retaliates in which case conflict may continue in a cyclic nature.

5.4 Escalation Of Conflict

In storytelling, conflicts can escalate and grow from something small into more thrilling and dramatic scenarios.

The following rules are in place for the escalation of conflict:

  • An escalation of an argument or a conflict NEEDS to be reasonable and realistic.

  • Gunplay over roleplay is against the rules. A gun is a powerful, lethal weapon, and it is to be used as a last resort and only in certain cases. Finding alternative ways to gradually escalate a conflict is encouraged.

  • If a scene of a character’s execution takes place and the player involved chooses to respawn rather than CK and exercise their New Life Rule, that should be considered the end of the conflict and should not be escalated any further.

GOOD EXAMPLE:

  • Your character is strolling through Saint Denis when suddenly they notice they have been pickpocketed. You find and strike up a conversation with the thief, demanding the return of your possessions. When they run away, you follow them and get into a fistfight.

BAD EXAMPLE:

  • Your character is strolling through Saint Denis when suddenly they notice they have been pickpocketed. You immediately get a posse of 6 together and go on a hunt to kidnap and shoot the thief, ending the roleplay and storyline over some minor change.

5.5 Not Valuing Your Life (NVL)

Your character should value their life at all times and be aware of the consequences that follow if they decide to not act in proportion to the situation they are in.

Your character should value their life based on the character’s values and realistic reactions, not because you want to quickdraw for the sake of it or to avoid a scene where you are the “losing” party. FearRP does not mean you must always comply, but it does mean acknowledging when another character has clear control of a situation and responding in a believable manner. Not complying means accepting consequences for your character.

If a character has the upper hand on your character, you must roleplay out the scene accordingly and should you choose to fight back and fail, the consequences should be reasonably severe whether medical or story impact. Failing to roleplay out appropriate consequences for your character if you choose to fight back or escalate a scene with reasonable justification based on character intent or situation will result in educational and disciplinary action.

The intent of this rule is to encourage immersive, character-driven roleplay while giving reasonable leeway to the player who is in control of the scene, allowing situations to naturally escalate or de-escalate without forcing outcomes.

This rule does not mean that when you are being robbed, assaulted, etc. you must roleplay out as a scared victim. Act within your character’s motivations, views, and skills, but understand that being on the losing side of a situation in which you are disadvantaged comes with greater consequence to be aware of. Choosing to resist overwhelming force must come with realistic consequences, and repeated disregard for danger may be considered NVL.

5.6 Gunplay Etiquette

Firearms exist to serve the story, not replace it. Weapons should only be used when escalation has been clearly roleplayed and all reasonable alternatives have been exhausted. Drawing a gun is a serious action with lasting consequences, not a default response to conflict.

Do not treat gunfights as a competition or purely mechanical encounter. Value your life at all times, respect fear and injury, and give others room to react. Random, trigger-happy behavior that ignores roleplay build-up will be treated as FailRP and NVL.

5.7 Unrealistic Movement & Strafing

Movement during roleplay, especially gunfights, should always maintain a degree of realism. This includes taking appropriate cover, ensuring that you are not in the line of fire when a gunfight ensues and similarly. Entering first person and spamming the A and D buttons while running side-to-side is prohibited and is considered “strafing”. Doing this reduces realism and is considered an exploitable mechanic in the game which ruins the fun for everyone else. Strafing side-to-side is also not allowed in third person.

6.0 Criminal Roleplay — Expectations & Etiquette

Criminal roleplay can be a fun way to shake it up for both law and civilians alike.

Below are a few tidbits on how to properly play out a criminal character.

  1. Your character should slowly introduce themselves into the world of crime in a realistic manner. Focus on gradually building up a narrative that makes sense for your character and their background.

  2. When committing a crime, attempt to thoroughly plan your nefarious actions before carrying them out.

  3. When your character commits a crime, make use of /me commands to showcase your character’s intentions and leave behind details and clues so the victim of your crimes may find a way back to you somehow. Remember that it’s a give-and-take in roleplay!

6.1 Robbery Rules & Basic Etiquette

Robberies are a classic part of criminal roleplay and a great tool for character build-up. The ruleset is intended to establish guidelines to ensure a consistent standard for quality roleplay.

Basic robbery etiquette:

  • A robbery should NEVER be used to gain assets, money, or weapons in an easy and quick way.

  • A robbery must be a tool to enrich roleplay and storyline for both the criminals and the robbed party in a realistic manner.

  • Robbing someone in the middle of town or by the telegram station is not permitted. However, kidnapping someone from town and then robbing them outside of town or in a secluded place is allowed.

  • It is not permitted to rob saddlebags.

  • It is not permitted to rob a character’s bank.

Both sides in a robbery scene are expected to engage in role-play. Criminals are expected to find ways to build a scene with the victims of the robbery and provide opportunities for the victim to develop it into a storyline. The victim must acknowledge the robbery and show respect for the situation, as well as engage in interaction. Sitting in silence and getting annoyed will be considered subpar roleplay and may even be considered a breach of rule 4.4 Collaborative Roleplay.

A robbery needs to be reasonable. Take only what is useful for roleplay and your character's situation, not for the sake of robbing. Taking something that will only wither away in storage when it could have provided an active roleplay experience for the robbed person is discouraged. An example of this is robbing a character’s longarm because you don’t have one yourself, but leaving them their farming supplies, as your character does not need them.

When robbing a player, the limits are as follows:

  • One piece of weaponry

  • Any cash in their pockets

  • Up to 3 stacks of items

When robbing a wagon/business, the limits are as follows:

  • Up to 10 stacks of items as long as the robber(s) have the means to realistically transport them.

When extorting a player/business:

  • A maximum of 500$ dollars is the allowed number to extort with.

When robbing a player camp stash/inventory (if lockpicked with camp owner present):

  • A maximum of 5 stacks of items

Remember robbery etiquette! Just because you can take up to the limit doesn’t mean you should.

When robbing players, criminal role-players should only take what their characters are looking for, need, or can realistically turn a profit on. Be considerate of your fellow role-players at all times, and treat robbery scenes as an opportunity for storytelling, not an asset grab. Criminal role-players who demonstrate a lack of courtesy during robberies will receive coaching from staff or potential punitive action, depending on the scenario. Following item limits does not automatically make a robbery valid. Staff will evaluate intent and roleplay quality

GOOD EXAMPLE OF ROBBING:

  • You and your group are bandits. You are at camp when one of your friends comes up to you and brings up that they need a new longarm. You get together, make a plan for a route, and go out to rob someone in an adequate setting, specifically scanning the area for someone with a long arm on their back to rob.

BAD EXAMPLE OF ROBBING:

  • You and your friends ride out to go fishing. On the way, you see a traveler with a customized longarm. You decide to ride up and rob him to acquire that gun, with no other reason than simply because you like the gun.

6.2 Crimes & Types Of Crimes

StrayRP offers numerous avenues for in-character crimes. You can find this out through roleplaying on the server.

  • Committing crimes 30 minutes before and after server restart is prohibited.

  • You may only ride out as a 6-man posse when you are a criminal group about to commit criminal activities. The same applies to the law in a 6v6 situation.

  • A bank may only be robbed once a week

  • A train may only be robbed once a week

6.3 Serial Killer, Cultist & Cannibal Roleplay

Characters like serial killers and cultists whose goal is to hurt and kidnap other players must be ticketed and allowed by admins first in order to keep an eye on the storylines and the effect the roleplay may have on the server.

If you play a serial killer, or cultist, you are to expect your character to either end up in Sisika for life or CK this character upon being caught. It should also not be your first character on StrayRP, and you will be held to a higher standard of roleplay than everyone else.

6.4 Hostage Rules

  • Hostages in robberies or other situations need to be respected both by law and by other parties involved. The fact that a human is in grave danger needs to be acknowledged.

  • Hostages have to be taken by force and may not pretend to be a hostage.

  • Hostages need to show fear for their lives, according to the character, and demonstrate an understanding that their lives are not in their hands.

  • Hostages may not be executed unless there is a grave reason or to send a strong message (i.e. hostage severely does not value their life) and a need to be part of the roleplay. There should be a base understanding that the hostage is part of the scene and not a tool unless used to further roleplay, however executing a hostage should come with the understanding of how such an action will reflect on your character and how they will be assessed as a threat. Expect any future negotiations to be very hostile, and understand that if you want to be the villain you will be treated as such.

  • Hostages may only be executed once a week once per gang. An execution is NOT a forced CK.

6.5 Torture Roleplay

Torture means to purposefully inflict pain on another character without the intention to incapacitate them. Pure animations, such as a knife slash, a pistol whip, or a punch in the face do not count. All parties involved in a torture scene must consent to the roleplay or remove themselves from the scene.

Torture may be roleplayed out under the following rules:

  • OOC permission of the victim is mandatory. This can happen through a /me or a written agreement over Discord. It is recommended to save proof of this permission for the safety of both parties.

  • Consent for torture must be obtained before the torture act is committed, and for the specific action taken. Instead of “Do you agree to torture?” express what your plan is!

Example: “Do you consent to torture by getting your character's finger broken?”

An Eye For An Eye Rule: The victim of torture may retaliate in kind without the permission of the other party. The retaliation may only be done in the same degree of torture that your character was subjected to. Any torture beyond what your character has suffered requires asking for consent. Be mindful of this when you decide to torture someone because they may do it back to you.

Disgusting or suggestive torture is strictly prohibited.

6.6 Restraint Policy

  • When a player is hogtied, it is prohibited to break out of a hogtie during a scene without suitable and numerous /me attempts messages.

  • If you have been left alone for 55 minutes (i.e. you’ve been ditched in the middle of nowhere), you may break out of the hogtie.

  • You may not use the ragdoll function to avoid being lassoed, hogtied, or restrained.

7.0 Law-Baiting

Luring law to different places by sending telegrams with the claim that a crime is taking place, or doing so in person, as well as shooting or committing other actions that will lead to law coming your way just in order to take law hostage or rob them, is prohibited without admin approval through a ticket. Approval may be given for certain planned-out scenes.

7.1 Prison Roleplay

Prison roleplay is a big part of criminal roleplay.

Sisika Guards will be held to a high standard of roleplay. Sisika inmates should be aware of their situation and take it seriously. Even with no playing guards online, Sisika is to be perceived by your character as a highly guarded prison.

Smuggling items around or committing crimes inside should be done carefully and realistically. Natural conflict between prisoners is allowed and highly encouraged.

7.2 Jailbreaks

Breaking someone out of jail may be done without admin approval as long as the criminal has not entered Sisika. This should be done with a high standard of roleplay and in situations that require it. Doing this every single day can become repetitive and may eventually be prohibited if it is abused. It should be treated with care, and a risk-reward assessment should be conducted.

GOOD EXAMPLE OF A JAILBREAK:

  • You and your gang robbed a bank. When running away, one of your friends gets caught. 5 of you arrive at camp, and you know your friend is facing 4 years (4 OOC days) in Sisika. You collectively decide to go back for him while he is being transported to Sisika from Valentine to St Denis. Your group risks being caught, but you all provide a fun scene to the law.

BAD EXAMPLE OF A JAILBREAK:

  • You and your gang have nothing to do. You hear about a member of a different gang getting jailed and ready for transport to Sisika. There is no role-playing reason to break them out, except that you are bored.

NOTE: Breaking someone out of Sisika requires prior admin approval. This is to ensure that the prison-break scene features prison guards and other key elements, thereby facilitating a fun and dynamic experience for everyone present. This can be done by submitting a ticket that includes the reason for the breakout, a detailed plan, and an estimated completion date. Only 2 inmates may be broken out of Sisika per breakout.

7.3 Combat Healing

Using bandages during gunfights is encouraged to prolong the gunfight. Bandages should be used while your character is in cover. No /me’s are needed during bandaging.

7.4 Gunfights

The following rules are in place for gunfights:

  • Before a gunfight ensues, a proper scene must play out where both groups need to be aware of a gunfight about to happen through indicators such as getting into position and /me’s. Verbal indicators are also highly encouraged. Shooting someone down mid-sentence to gain an advantage by quickly eliminating an opponent is not allowed.

  • A gunfight is still part of roleplay. Shooting each other down with the simple goal to get as many downed as possible is discouraged. Leave space for cinematic scenes!

  • Rushing the enemy’s side and trying to melee attack an armed opponent is NVL in most cases.

  • Exploitation of animations such as doing the running shove to force a character unable to fight back will result in disciplinary action.

8.0 Factions, Businesses, & Member Limits

At StrayRP, it is possible and allowed to create factions or groups — be it civilian, criminal, legal, or native.

However, rules have been implemented for these factions to maintain fairness and prevent conflict by avoiding inter-factional entanglements. We want the server to be fun and interesting, and faction conflict keeps things intriguing. All recruiting for a faction must be done In Character.

Rules for factions:

  • Each faction or posse is limited to a maximum enrolment of 10 members.

  • Each faction is allowed 1 ally. That ally is allowed to fight for you in your faction’s battles and do core criminal activities with your faction, such as bank robberies, moonshining, etc.

  • Each faction is allowed to own 2 businesses.

  • Associates are considered people who are not part of any faction but will do minor criminal activities with your faction, such as small robberies, selling moonshine, and similar. Associates are not allowed to fight your battles, but they are allowed to defend themselves if they happen to be in a situation where they are attacked alongside your faction.

  • When riding around and engaging in combat, a posse is not allowed to exceed 6 active members. This is part of our PvP restrictions to maintain fairness.

A faction is recognized when there are 3 (three) or more, up to 10 (ten), members in the group. This group may operate within Fairmont how they see fit. A faction or group may be granted special crafting abilities if the roleplay is put in place for it.

8.1 Character Kill Agreements

A Character Kill Agreement (or a CK Clause) is a contract signed between the faction and a player that, if the player betrays, falls out of line, or similar, depending on what the contract states, the faction is allowed to kill the player’s character.

CK Agreements are entirely voluntary and at your own discretion. Once they are signed, they are permanent and irreversible unless the faction agrees to release your character from the agreement.

The CK Agreement must be documented and declared to the admin team in a ticket.

To release your character from a CK Agreement, you must speak to the leader of the faction or group you are in where you signed the CK Agreement and resolve the issue at hand. The staff team will not become involved in disputes regarding CK Agreements.

8.2 Territory

The State of Fairmont is a vast region with numerous areas and towns for people to settle in. Territory can be claimed and fought for entirely In Character.

An example list of areas that can be considered turf/territory:

  • Camps, houses, shacks

  • Businesses

  • Streets / Neighborhoods

  • Ranches

Towns, counties, or public services are not and cannot be considered as territory.

Exceptions to this rule are:

  • Thieves Landing

  • Colter

  • Limpany

  • Lakay

  • Van Horn

  • Pleasance

  • Tumbleweed

9.0 Medical Roleplay

The player is free to decide their character's own injuries based on the situation they are in. Nobody can force an injury upon your character; it is all up to the player’s discretion. All players are, however, expected to roleplay their character’s injury to the best of their abilities through /me. Depending on the injury, your character should portray the difficulty and/or disabilities associated with specific injuries. This could be anything from reduced mobility, pain, or difficulty holding a gun after a gunshot wound to their dominant arm.

There are many ways to be creative when roleplaying an injury, and we ask that all our players strive to be as accurate as possible with their roleplaying of injuries and medical scenarios. For our roleplayers who enjoy playing doctors and other medical professionals, it brings them roleplay when you come to them with an injury or an in-character illness.

Please be mindful of following up on the medical roleplay given to you by the medical professional. It is heavily discouraged to ignore medical procedures, treatments, and appointments prescribed to you by the medical professional In Character. If you choose not to follow appointments, and similarly, you are expected to roleplay out the consequences of not doing so and what happens to your character if you don’t treat your wounds, etc.

Medical staff are expected to roleplay with downed characters and facilitate a scene. This in character job role should not be just a means to making virtual income. If a downed character is attempting medical roleplay, the doctor should reflect that with their own.

9.1 Unconscious Etiquette

When your character has been downed, the following rules apply:

  • Your character may be played as awake depending on the injury you decide to play. Under no circumstances may this be exploited to issue callouts or attempt to intervene while the scene is still ongoing, even if the character was downed during one. Any such attempts are considered powergaming.

  • When unconscious, your character will not remember any conversations or locations that occurred while they were down. You may still use /me to give details on your character's state, but not speak.

  • Acting unconscious without indicating that the character might be awake through /me’s or sounds is prohibited.

10.0 Respawning – New Life Rule

Upon respawning, you keep all your items. There is no situation in which you must roleplay forgetting events or forced amnesia upon being downed. That is strictly player choice.

If attacked by a wild animal (and you are entirely on your own) and you do not wish to go through the RP of animal injury, you may respawn and RP that the animal attack never happened if you wish.

If you are downed by a player and no one comes up until 20 minutes after calling for help, you may respawn with your memories intact. Exempt from this is when your character was permanently killed. If you already plan on respawning or do not wish to play the injuries, please refrain from calling for help.

You may not retaliate immediately after being downed, and must wait at minimum 24 hours.

10.1 Character Death (Character Kill)

Only the person who plays the character decides when the character’s story ends, whether it be through death or departure from the stage.

A character's death may not be reversed under any circumstances. Any /me’s that indicate certain death, such as /me no pulse, or injuries that point towards certain death, such as a cut through the throat or a severed head, will result in said irreversible character death.

In scenes where your character may have the upper hand and it is meant to be an execution-style scene, it is allowed to ask through /me’s for permission to CK your fellow roleplayer’s character. If they decline and say no, it must be respected, and the scene may carry on as intended without CK being present.

11.0 Property Renting & Business Leasing Guidelines —Real Estate Agency

Housing is available to rent. You may not walk up and simply purchase/rent a property, but must speak to an REA agent first and they will arrange your property for you.

Below is a list of property renting and business leasing rules regarding properties and businesses.

Please note that property and business leasing/renting is a privilege. These assets exist to support long-term character development, immersive storytelling, and a balanced in-game economy. All ownership is managed through the Real Estate Agency (REA) and is fully subject to administrative oversight.

Failure to follow these rules may result in seizure, investigation, or permanent blacklist from leasing/renting. Contact REA first ICly and then through a ticket for assistance.

11.1 Renting Limits

  • Each player may rent or lease:

    • 1 Residential Property (House/Apartment)

    • 1 Business Property

  • Some properties (ex: ranches) count as both a house and a business

  • Ownership must be tied to your main, most active character

  • If your main character owns a home, alts may not own houses

11.2 Eligibility Requirements

To apply for house renting:

  • Rentable Property: Character must be 14 days old

  • Business: Character must be 30 days old

  • No warnings, bans, or admin actions within the last 30 days

  • Must show consistent RP activity on the owning character

  • Businesses cannot be co-owned

11.3 Inactivity & Seizure Rules

  • Two weeks of inactivity on the owning character puts your business and home at risk

  • Staff may contact you if inactivity is detected

  • If no response or improvement occurs, seizure/removal of business/property will follow

  • Businesses must be actively roleplayed, not passively owned

It is the player’s responsibility to notify staff of extended absence. Failure to do so may result in loss without appeal.

If three total properties or businesses are seized from a player:

  • That player is permanently blacklisted from owning property or businesses on ALL characters

If you need extended absence:

  • You must open a ticket in advance to avoid seizure

11.4 Criminal Conduct & Business Risk

  • Business owners repeatedly engaging in large-scale or deadly crime:

    • Risk law investigations

    • Risk forced business seizure

11.5 Employment & Job Restrictions

  • Players may work:

    • 1 Government Job

    • OR 2 Civilian Jobs that do NOT benefit one another

  • Examples:

    • Lawman + Saloon Worker (Allowed)

    • Blacksmith + Gunsmith (Not Allowed)

If you own a business or hold a legal faction role:

  • You may NOT work at:

    • Blacksmith

    • Gunsmith

    • Horse Ranch

    • Another legal faction job

11.6 Economy Protection & Pricing Rules

  • Businesses must price goods reasonably

  • Owners must be able to:

    • Pay fair employee wages

    • Maintain economic balance

  • Businesses may ONLY buy and sell:

    • Items directly related to their business

Buy orders for unrelated goods require staff approval

11.7 Mobile Sales & Territory Rules

  • Businesses may:

    • Sell from their property

    • Travel and sell via wagon

11.8 Property Transfers & Sales

You cannot sell a property or a business as they are leased or rented. A lease or a property may be transferred to a different player if there is a roleplay reason for it.

Residential Transfers

  • Only the original renter may transfer a home

  • Must contact REA first so REA has approved of who owns the house post-transfer

Business Transfers

  • Businesses may be transferred with staff approval

  • Businesses may ONLY be transferred through REA

11.9 Enforcement Disclaimer

REA may refuse service based on:

  • IC behavior

  • Threats, harassment, or intimidation

11.10 Inheriting Properties

It is not possible to write your property or business into a will. Upon a character’s death, their property or business will go back to REA for resale.

12.0 Water Raiding Rules

In Fairmont, water is a controlled, high-value resource. As such, conflict over Mineral Water sources is expected — but must always be roleplay-driven, structured and fair. These rules govern raids on Mineral Water sources and water towers.

12.1 What Counts as a Water Raid

A Water Raid is defined as any attempt to:

  • Seize control of a Mineral Water source

  • Steal stored water from a property, camp, or wagon

  • Hijack or ambush a water transport

If your intent is to disrupt access to clean water, this is a raid.

12.2 Valid Raid Targets

You may raid:

  • Water transport wagons

  • Player-owned water storage

  • Mineral Water sources

  • Faction-controlled sources

You may not raid:

  • Fresh characters (new players)

12.3 Initiation & Escalation Requirements

All water raids must be properly initiated in-character.

You must:

  • Clearly announce demands

  • Give reasonable time to comply

  • Allow negotiation or surrender

  • Provide a visible threat (guns drawn, roadblock, etc.)

12.4 Frequency & Cooldowns

To prevent farming of Mineral Water:

  • The same group may only raid the same target once every 72 hours

  • A water source that has been raided is considered “unstable” for 72 hours and cannot be raided again

  • Factions may only launch one water raid per IRL week

13.0 Horse Trainer Rules — Fairmont Equine Society

If you are a Horse Trainer, you represent the Fairmont Equine Society, headquartered at Braithwaite Manor. The Society oversees horse training, breeding, and distribution across the territory.

Horse Trainers are granted access to the following communal ranches:

  • MacFarlane’s Ranch

  • Pronghorn Ranch

  • Dewberry Creek Ranch (Breeding Enabled)

These ranches are shared roleplay spaces, not privately owned properties.

As a Horse Trainer, you are responsible for maintaining an active, believable ranch environment. Ranches should feel lived in and operational at all times.

This includes:

  • Maintaining consistent day-to-day roleplay (training, sales, care, events)

  • Actively involving ranch hands and workers in meaningful RP

  • Avoiding idle or “storage-only” use of ranch spaces

Horse ranches are living businesses, not passive income sources. Continued inactivity may result in administrative intervention.

13.1 Wild Horses & Training

Wild horses may be captured, tamed, and trained by Horse Trainers. Training courses are scattered across Fairmont for you as a Horse Trainer to utilize and bond with the horses you train.

An example of common wild horses include:

  • Morgan

  • Kentucky Saddler

  • American Standardbred

These horses:

  • Require taming and training before sale

  • May be priced freely within reason

  • Should remain affordable and accessible

NOTE: Attempting to capture rare or culturally significant horses (e.g. Nokota, Appaloosa, American Paint) may carry in-character consequences. Wild horses are meant to be low-cost, low-risk, entry-level stock.

13.2 Specialization & Prestigious Breeds

Each Horse Trainer must declare a specialization:

  • A Prestigious Breed

OR

  • Breeding (Foal Raising)

This must be approved by the Head of the Fairmont Equine Society.

Prestigious Breeds

  • Turkoman

  • Arabian

  • Norfolk Roadster

  • Breton

  • Irish Cob

  • Missouri Fox Trotter

  • Hungarian Halfbred

  • Akhal Teke

  • Fjord

  • Friesian

Horse Trainers may only import and work with their chosen specialization. Importing a horse you do not specialize in is considered a rulebreak.

Importing & Training

  • Base Cost: $300 (Braithwaite Stables)

  • Horse must be fully trained before sale

Sale Price:

  • Fixed at $500

Profit Split:

  • $100 → Horse Trainer

  • $100 → Ranch Hand

No discounts. No price increases.

13.3 Horse Breeding

Bred horses may have unique coats or traits not available through imports. Horses that are bred and raised may be named, documented, and sold with lineage. Breeding must remain roleplay-driven and not be used for rapid asset generation. If you want to breed prestigious horses, you must purchase them from a fellow Horse Trainer that specializes in the horse breed you are looking to breed.

Breeding Cost

  • Base Fee: $300

Breeding Process & Roleplay Expectations

Breeding is not instant and must be roleplayed across four stages:

  1. Pair selection (mare + stallion)

  2. Gestation

  3. Foal care

  4. Training into adulthood

Foal Outcomes

Foals may result in:

  • Mixed Breed

  • Purebred

Sale Pricing

Type Price Range Mixed Breed $350–$450 Pure bred $450-$600

14.0 Communal Roleplay Areas

At StrayRP we have a hybrid system of owned businesses but also communal areas for players to roleplay in. These communal areas are businesses that aren’t directly owned by a single person but are rather owned by the community to make use of.

Anyone can hang out, host events, or sell their crafted items there. Players are expected to coexist and share the limited properties. This is to bring fairness to the community, especially players who are unable to commit their time in owning a business.

You may operate your own business out of these locations but cannot change the official names of these properties nor can you lay claim to them as solely yours as these areas belong to the community.

Gatekeeping of these areas is strictly prohibited as this is a shared RP space.

The following properties are communal and may be run by anyone:

  • Armadillo Saloon

  • Armadillo General Store

  • Van Horn Pawn Shop

  • Van Horn Saloon

  • Manzanita Post

  • Colter Saloon

  • Blackwater Tailor & Shop

  • Blackwater Gazette (News Office)

  • Blackwater Detective Agency/Law Office

  • Blackwater Florist

  • Blackwater Photography Studio

  • St Denis Photography Studio

  • Blackwater Theatre

  • St Denis Fontana Theatre

  • St Denis Vaudeville Theatre

  • Emerald Racetrack’s Amenities (Owned by Fairmont Equine Society but is open to the community to use)

Please keep in mind that these communal areas may be subject to change in the future and that there may be areas missing that are not yet owned but not on the list.

But what if I want to run my own saloon? You can! Either as a shared space where you are not the owner but rather part of the community OR you can contact REA and see if there is an available business for you.

GOOD TO KNOW:

Everyone can craft basic recipes and items You don’t need a business to cook, brew, or make simple items. Businesses don’t spawn items for free – they still have to gather and craft like everyone else.

IC competition is fine, OOC gatekeeping is not Compete with prices, quality, brand, RP and even IC intimidation if it fits. Don’t use OOC rules or staff to push others out of public places or whole product categories.

15.0 Camp Rules

At the Manzanita Shop, it is possible to buy pre-set camping supplies and a campfire set to decorate your personal camp. Each player is limited to one (1) camp, so it is recommended to be mindful that only one of your characters can have a camp. Due to the camp’s persistence system, you can refuel the camp so it stays for a maximum of 14 days. Once the fuel runs out, the camp disappears together with your inventory stash. You are responsible for maintaining your camp and refueling it when needed.

16.0 Native Roleplay

Playing as a Native character is allowed. Recruitment can be done IC, and with the appropriate roleplay, you may be granted the “Native” society role in which you will have access to the Native crafting category and the Wapiti stables. To get access you must open a general ticket with staff and showcase your character to be approved for the crafting menu. The crafting menu will give access to various exclusive crafting recipes that only Native characters who are granted access to the menu will be able to make.

In Fairmont lore, the water is sacred to the Native community. Please find ways to incorporate that into your roleplay as a Native character.

For the sake of lore-consistency, the following horses are available from the Wapiti Stables and tameable in the Wild for Native characters:

  • Nez Pearce (stable)

  • Mustang (stable)

  • Colorado Ranger (stable)

  • Tiger Horse (stable)

  • Appaloosa (wild)

  • American Paint (wild)

  • Nokota (wild)

Please keep in mind to do the correct and appropriate roleplay surrounding these horses. Don’t just go out into the wild and capture wild horses simply because you are able; find ways to incorporate horse breaking/taming into your roleplay, allow your character to be taught by someone within the Native community who is more experienced, and so forth.

Caricatures, stereotypes, or exaggerated portrayals of culture, spirituality, or speech are not permitted. Native roleplay must be handled respectfully at all times. Caricatures, stereotypes, or exaggerated portrayals of culture, spirituality, or speech are not permitted.

Conflict involving Native characters must be rooted in in-character motivations such as land, resources, or agreements — not race or stereotypes. As a whitelisted Native character, you are expected to contribute to the roleplay environment of the Wapiti community and represent the faction actively and respectfully.

If a portrayal is reported as harmful or inappropriate, staff may require adjustments regardless of intent.
